Sonia Rykiel - Resort 2013

Sonia Rykiel - Resort 2013

So quintessentially a Left Bank celebrity is Sonia Rykiel that the Café de Flore has named a sandwich in her honor. This queen of knits, who never learned how to actually work a pair of needles, is a self-taught designer who describes her method as off-the-cuff: “First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman,” Rykiel said in 2008, on the occasion of her company’s fortieth anniversary. “Then I made a sweater”—the popular poor boy—“because I wanted to have one that wasn’t like anyone else’s.”

Rykiel opened shop on rue de Grenelle in Paris in 1968, after designing for many years for Laura, her husband’s boutique. Her label was among the pioneers of the créateur, or ready-to-wear, movement in France—but, as G. Y. Dryansky wrote in Vogue, “She marched to a different rhythm: quieter, more personal.”

Rykiel has always been a proponent of “uncomplicated comfort,” as The New York Timesonce put it. She likes to design interchangeable separates with what one ad copywriter described as “that close-to-the-body, nothing-on fit.” She created her first “braless” dress in 1964, promoted the layered look, and popularized rainbow stripes, massive fur wraps, marabou, vintage-y dresses, and culottes.

In 1974, long before the Japanese and Belgians made catchwords of deconstruction and minimalism, this black-clad, flame-haired designer was exposing seams, unhemming hems, and removing linings—in the process creating the “démodé,” or undone, look. “People said making clothes inside out was not proper,” Rykiel later told Women’s Wear Daily. “I disagreed, because clothes that are inside out are as beautiful as a cathedral.”

The striking designer who was first introduced to Vogue readers in 1967 as the “ravishing, red-headed Sonia Rykiel,” remains an object of fascination decades into her career. “She is a paradox,” Christian Lacroix said in 2008. “She’s elegant and erotic, distant and sensual.”

Rykiel, it seems, would agree with at least the latter part of Lacroix’s assessment. “The key to my collections is sensuality,” she told Vogue in 1981. “Being one step ahead of a fashion trend is not so important to me,” she told the magazine some two decades later, “what matters is to always forge ahead.” Since 1965 she has been doing just that with her daughter Nathalie, now the company president, at her side.

BCBG Max Azria

BCBG Max Azria

BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP is taking the world by storm. With critically acclaimed collections, a loyal following of Hollywood's top celebrities and a strong worldwide presence, this fashion powerhouse has evolved into one of the hottest names in the fashion industry today.

Founded in 1989, BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP is the lifetime vision of one man: Founder, Designer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Max Azria. In 1981, after eleven years of designing a line of women's wear in his native Paris, Azria moved to the United States and launched Jess, a series of new-concept retail boutiques offering hip French fashion to American women. After years of success, Azria decided to pursue his dream of launching a design house that spoke to the modern woman-thus BCBGMAXAZRIA was born. Named for the French phrase bon chic, bon genre, a Parisian slang meaning "good style, good attitude," the brand embodies a true combination of European sophistication and American spirit.

Key to BCBGMAXAZRIA's success has been Azria's ability to maintain his creativity while maximizing his keen business sense. As one of today's rare breed of designer-businessmen, Azria used his talent to create a new platform in the industry. With the launch of the BCBGMAXAZRIA brand, he redefined the designer category by offering innovative, high-quality clothing at contemporary price points. As a result, Azria was inducted to the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 1998.

Lubov Azria, Chief Creative Officer of BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP and Max's wife, joined the company as a designer in 1991 and was named Creative Director in 1996. Under Lubov's influence, the BCBGMAXAZRIA brand has evolved from an emerging contemporary line to one of America's leading design houses, with collections that include evening dresses, denim, outerwear, footwear, swimwear, handbags and small leather goods. In recognition of her accomplishments as a designer and creative leader, Lubov Azria was inducted into the CFDA in 2010.

Striving to realize Max's vision, the Azrias introduced additional product categories through a series of licensing agreements with some of the industry's most reputable companies, including the world leader in men's shirting, Philips-Van Heusen Corporation, for men's dress shirts and ties, which launched in Summer 2004. This licensing deal was closely followed by similar agreements with Geneva Watch Co. for women's watches, Colors in Optics for sunwear and ClearVision for optical eyewear in Spring 2005.

Reinforcing BCBGMAXAZRIA as a premier American fashion brand, Max and Lubov Azria successfully launched the collection on the runway for the first time during New York's Fall 1996 Fashion Week. The following season, The New York Times hailed, "Mr. Azria imbued his collection with worldly élan." In February 2006, in response to both their critical success and the needs and aspirations of their most discerning customers, the Azrias launched an exclusive runway designer collection called Max Azria. The collection allows the designers to explore their creativity full force, ultimately resulting in a line of directional, sophisticated designs in the most luxurious fabrics. Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Rachel Bilson, Eva Mendes and others became fast fans of the brands and list BCBGMAXAZRIA and Max Azria as staples in their wardrobes.

At the other end of the design spectrum is the Azrias' highly exclusive collection of couture gowns, launched in February 2004 under the label Max Azria Atelier. Taking inspiration from the glamour and sensuality of Hollywood, Max and Lubov create opulent and elegant one-of-a-kind gowns for celebrity clients and red-carpet events. Sharon Stone, Halle Berry, Beyoncé Knowles, Alicia Keys, Lucy Liu, Fergie and others have walked the red carpet wearing Max Azria Atelier.

In 1998 BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP acquired the esteemed Hervé Léger fashion house, marking the first time in history that a French couturier had been absorbed by an American designer. The Azrias relaunched the Hervé Léger label in early 2007 with their own designs, which have since been embraced by celebrities such as Kate Winslet, Diane Kruger, Rihanna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and Catherine Zeta-Jones. For Fall 2008, in addition to showing BCBCMAXAZRIA and Max Azria during New York Fashion Week, the Azrias presented the Hervé Léger by Max Azria collection. This marked the first time that an American designer produced three major fashion shows for three distinct collections during one New York Fashion Week.

The Fall 2008 season also witnessed the merging of the BCBGirls and To The Max collections to create one, comprehensive, young-contemporary lifestyle brand named BCBGeneration, which is designed for women of all generations seeking fashion that balances a feminine, sexy aesthetic with an eclectic, urban sensibility. In Fall 2009, the Group expanded again to include a new collection with teen superstar Miley Cyrus, appropriately titled Miley Cyrus & Max Azria, that retails exclusively at Walmart and offers customers affordable and trend-right apparel. Arriving in stores in early August, the line includes tops, pants, graphic tees, shoes and accessories, all priced below $20.

On the business front, late August 2005 saw two strategic acquisitions important for the Group's future growth: the France-based designer and distributor Alain Manoukian (renamed Manoukian in 2007) and the Spain-based designer and distributor Don Algod򬬠Both companies served as valuable springboards for the Group's European expansion. Continuing the company's rapid domestic growth in February 2006, BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP acquired G+G Retail, which operated over 400 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico under the names Rave, Rave Girl and G+G.

Throughout his career, Azria has personally received a multitude of awards, including California Designer of the Year (1995), Atlanta Designer of the Year (1996), the Fashion Performance Award (1997) for outstanding performance and influence within the fashion industry, and the prestigious Spirit of Life Award (1997) from the City of Hope. In 1998 Divine Design honored Azria as Women's Designer of the Year, and General Motors selected him as their spokesperson for Concept:Cure, an internationally renowned charity that supports breast cancer research and awareness. Azria was further honored with the Otis Fashion Achievement Award (2000) from Otis College of Art and Design, Hollywood Life's Breakthrough Award (2004) for outstanding achievements within the entertainment industry and the Dallas Fashion Award (2005) for excellence in the contemporary category. In 2007 he was presented with the Wells Fargo Century Fashion Achievement Award at the L.A. Fashion Awards and with the Woodbury Design Award in acknowledgement of his vision and innovation. In recognition of the successful relaunch of the Hervé Léger brand, Azria was presented with the 2008 Fashion Excellence Award at the 33rd Annual Dallas Fashion Awards.

In June 2007, Max and Lubov Azria co-chaired with Kate Bosworth the Fifth Annual Art Party benefit celebrating the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program (ISP). The Azrias returned as co-chairs of the event for four consecutive years. They hosted the event in 2008 with Rachel Bilson, producing a special Hervé Léger collaboration with artist E.V. Day, and again in 2009 with Camilla Belle, collaborating with artist Mark Fox on a specially designed umbrella celebrating BCBGMAXAZRIA's 20th anniversary. In 2010 the Azrias co-chaired with Emilie Ravin and worked with four ISP alumni to create one-of-a-kind hand-painted BCBGMAXAZRIA Runway dresses to be auctioned off at the event.

Adding to the list of successes, the Azrias have become retail giants, owning and operating over 550 BCBGMAXAZRIA retail boutiques throughout the world, with each serving as a consummate showcase for their women's ready-to-wear and accessory collections. Within the United States, there are currently over 180 BCBGMAXAZRIA boutiques. On an international level, BCBGMAXAZRIA opened its first two European boutiques in 1999, with a flagship located in the most significant shopping district in Paris. With additional international boutiques located in Canada, Venezuela, Chile, Portugal, Greece, Bahrain, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Russia and other countries, the retail network is now present throughout the world.

To complete the retail phenomenon, the Azrias' collections are also sold in specialty stores and in-store shops in major department stores across the globe, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Lord & Taylor, Dillard's, the UK's Harvey Nichols, Hong Kong's Lane Crawford, Taiwan's Mitsukoshi and Singapore's Takashimaya stores.

Since the company's start in 1989, Max and Lubov Azria have succeeded in building an impressive portfolio of twenty-two brands: BCBGMAXAZRIA, BCBGMAXAZRIA Runway, Max Azria, Max Azria Atelier, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, Hervé Léger Couture, BCBGeneration, Max and Cleo, Lola, Miley Cyrus & Max Azria, BCBGirls, BCBG//Attitude, To The Max, Tex by Max Azria, Manoukian, Street Beat, Parallel, Maxime, Noun, Don Algod򬪠Dorothée Bis and Dorotennis. They have evolved BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP into one of the most diversified fashion houses in the world, offering some of the most sought-after collections on the market. While immediate objectives include the further expansion of BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP product categories and retail boutique locations globally, the Azrias' long-term goals are to continuously grow their fashion empire and further establish BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP as a worldwide powerhouse of style.

Isabel Marant - Spring 2013

    Isabel Marant - Spring 2013

you know her. The French girl with the just-rolled-out-of-bed, can’t-be-bothered look. She pulls on last night’s clothes—slouchy tee, gray jeans. Fingers through the hair, a touch of makeup, and she goes out. Yet she looks smashing. Perhaps it’s her ankle boots (scuffed just so), boyish jacket, and lambskin shoulder bag. Or maybe it’s the way that skinny chain-mail scarf or mass of bracelets comes off as an afterthought. Equal parts confidence and nonchalance—that’s what makes this Gallic girl so enviable, and no one captures it better than Isabel Marant.

A native Parisian, Marant blends ethnic bohemia and tomboy street chic effortlessly, and her name has long been on the lips of fashion insiders: editors, models, and sexy actresses like Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz. Until recently, Americans had to jet across the pond to get their hands on her notoriously hard-to-find pieces—slim pants, sheer tees, and draped minis—which they carried home by the armload. (The more enterprising could turn a quick profit on eBay.) The label’s exclusivity was just part of its mystique. “It took some time to build up,” Marant acknowledged in 2008, “but I have never fallen.”

But even after fifteen years in the business, with a rock-solid fan base and booming boutiques, Marant didn’t quite know how to bring her vision to a wider audience—that is, until she reconnected with her childhood friend Emmanuelle Alt, then the fashion director of French Vogue. “My strength is not putting clothes together,” Marant said in 2010. “Emmanuelle, on the other hand, is perfect for this. . . . It’s funny because she has managed to create exactly the image I wanted.”

By 2011, that look of perfectly tousled French cool was hitting its stride, with waiting lists for Marant’s fringed and studded boots wrapping clear around the globe. Stateside fans can now get their Isabel fix in SoHo, New York, where Marant and Jerome Dreyfuss, her bag-designer husband, have set up side-by-side shops.

Let's take a look at four of the best lipstick colors for Asians as modeled by top Chinese couture models.

Pale Pink Lipstick (below)

Pale pink works especially well as a lipstick shade on days you wear minimal makeup. It works because it provides a soft color that contrasts with the dark black of your hair. At the same time the lightness of the color matches the subtlety of your barely there makeup look.

Maroon Lipstick (above)

Maroon is a shade of lipstick you wear when you want to be noticed. It is one of the best lipstick colors for Asian skin because it will suit virtually any Asian skin color. It works on light skin because the dark berry shade pronounces paleness. And it works on medium and darker complexions because it provides color depth that makes your lip shade more noticable. Maroon lip colors work very well on days you want to wear black or brown clothing, especially near your face.

Bright Pink Lipstick (above)

Bright Pink is one of the most feminine lip shades you can wear. This shade is best suited to light and medium skin colors. It is also a shade that works best when you are wearing pink somewhere else -- on your lids, or even in a scarf around your neck.

This lipstick looks very nice when you wear it as the only color on your face, meaning no eyeshadow or blush. Simply wear a smooth coat of foundation, black eyeliner, and black mascara.

Grecian Dresses

Wear A Grecian Dress With A Ruched Front To Hide Problem Areas

A grecian dress with ruched detailing is the most forgiving style dress you can wear and is perfect for any body type.
This style has a sexy cut with significant layers that cover flaws and enhance any body type. Chose a fabric that is substantial in weight as it will drape very nicely on your body; thinner fabrics tend to cling and allow no disguising of lines or problem areas.

Waist-Minimizing Grecian Dresses

Since grecian dresses come in so many cuts and styles it is not surprising that there is the perfect grecian dress that combines impressive grandeur with a waist-minimizing design.
The best technique to disguise a thick waist while wearing a dress is to chose a style that either raises, lowers or eliminates the waistline. A drop-waist grecian dress, which hits somewhere around the hipbones, or empire waist grecian dresses which have a raised waist are great choices.
This grecian dress combines a flattering empire waistline with forgiving flowing fabric, a perfect choice for someone who wants to minimize their waistlin

Make Organic Perfumes

Make Organic Perfumes

f you love fragrance, want to be earth friendly, but can't afford a ton of money knowing how to make your own organic perfumes may be an option you should consider.
It really is quite simple and uses just a few ingredients. Although it may take a while for you to mix the perfect scent, you can be sure that you will learn plenty in the process. Who knows? You may find you have a real talent for it and it can turn into an income for you.

Why Organic?

Using organic ingredients as much as possible in your fragrances just makes sense. Conventional perfumes are full of a variety of chemicals and chemical residues. All though they are found in small amounts they could build up over time and cause health problems for you over a period of time.
Some of the substances of concern are:
  • Petroleum products
  • Phthalates
  • Herbicide, insecticide, and fertilizer residues
These materials have been linked with birth defects, cancer, and other health problems. What better reason to learn a new hobby?

How to Make Organic Perfume at Home

You really don't need to set up a room in your home to look like Dexter's Lab. With just a few ingredients and some patience you can be wearing your fragrance in a month or so.

Choosing Materials for Scent

You will be using vodka as a base. When you add things to vodka the alcohol in it draws out the scents and flavors of these items. Consider the following for scent:
  • Cocoa nibs
  • Citrus peel
  • Ginger
  • Bay leaf
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Cloves
  • Peppercorns
  • Vanilla pod
  • Cedar chips
  • Pine needles
  • Rose petals
As you can see, you can use almost anything to add scent. Use organic essential oils to round out the fragrance and make it more complex. Use no more than two or three essential oils to start. Simplicity is best while you are learning. Use no more than 10 drops all together for ¼ cup of vodka.

Instructions for Making Organic Fragrance

  • ¼ c vodka
  • Organic essential oils of your choice
  • Herbs, flower petals, wood chips, and other materials that have pleasant scents (keep these organic if possible)
  • Distilled water
  • Covered glass container
  • Dark perfume bottle
  1. Place the vodka in a glass container. A mason jar works well for this.
  2. Add the chosen material or materials to the vodka. Again, use only one or two to start. When you have more experience you can experiment with more complex formulas.
  3. Now, add a few drops of essential oil.
  4. Cover the jar tightly and store in a cool, dark place for at least a month.
  5. Toward the end of the month try a bit of the fragrance every couple of days to see how it smells. When it is as strong as you want it is done.
  6. Strain out any solids using cheesecloth and a sieve.
  7. Add distilled water, one tablespoon at a time if the scent seems too harsh.
  8. Put the perfume in a pretty, dark bottle and display it proudly.

Scent Combinations to Try

If you aren't feeling particularly inspired consider some of these combinations.
  • Vanilla bean, tangerine essential oil, neroli
  • Cocoa Nibs, cinnamon stick, patchouli
  • Coffee beans, coco nibs, vanilla, cinnamon
  • Rose otto, tangerine, ylang ylang

Where to Find Essential Oils

Finding essential oils is usually not too difficult. Most health food stores carry a variety of them and there are hundreds available online.
When you first begin learning how to make organic perfume you may want to stick with the oils that you can find locally. This way you can sniff each of them and find the aromas that you like. Also be sure to read the descriptions and what they are used for. Making a perfume that is uniquely your own is great but making one that uses aromatherapy to balance your emotions is even better.
For example, tangerine and rose are a nice combination to the nose. Tangerine essential oil lifts moods and makes people happier while rose balances the emotions. This is a great combination to wear to a stressful office meeting, wouldn't you say?
Creating your own organic perfumes helps you to express your individuality in a unique way. While others may look for perfumes that express their individual style they can only hope to find on that they like and not more than a few million other people wear. Making your own ensures your individuality; no one will be wearing it except for you.

make your own natural lip plumper

make your own natural lip plumper

Lip plumpers

Having big beautiful full lips has been a popular sensation for a long time. Not every one is born with lips like this. People try all kinds of products and procedures to obtain this look. These procedures and products can be dangerous. Luckily there are some all natural ingredients that you can use to make your very own all natural safe lip plumper. These natural ingredients irritate the lips slightly so that they swell up a little and look more full. Using these recipes are just as effective as the store bought plumpers but are way less expensive. When making your own plumper you control the potency so that you can choose how much your lips can handle. This prevents burning sensations that can be painful.
Peppermint essential oil
Peppermint essential oil

Essential oils that will make your lips plump up

Essential oils can be used for all kinds of things. They can even be used to plump up your lips. A list of essential oils that will make your lips fuller is listed bellow.
  • Peppermint
  • Spearmint
  • Cayenne pepper
  • cinnamon
  • Wintergreen
  • Menthol
  • Ginger
Only use one or two drops per 2 ounces you don't want to burn your lips.
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil

Choosing the carrier oil

Alright so you have picked out your essential oil and now you are ready for the next step. Now you need to pick your carrier oil or other liquid you choose to water down the solution. A few different kinds you could try are listed bellow.
  • Jojoba oil
  • Olive oil
  • Water
  • Coconut oil
You can use what ever carrier oil you would like but I get the best results with olive and jojoba oil. Water is the least expensive but doesn't seal in moisture the same.

What you will need

You will not need much this recipe is pretty simple and the best part is it barely costs anything.
  • One small 2 ounce container
  • The essential oil
  • The carrier oil

What to do next

  • Take your carrier oil and fill the container almost to the brim
  • Add one or two drops of the essential oil
  • Seal and shake well
  • Now that you have mixed it give it a try to see whether or not it needs to be watered down
When you test your lip plumper you will feel a slight tingly feeling. Tingling is good this means it is working properly. If your lips feel like they are burning the solution is to strong and needs to be watered down some with the carrier oil. Make sure that you don't have any allergies to the oils you choose before making the lip plumper.
